Survey Work

Project consultants from the Public Archaeology Laboratory (PAL) conducted onshore archaeological surveys for portions of the proposed substation site for the project including public land operated by the West Barnstable Fire District and the Barnstable Conversation Commission. Survey work began on May 30, 2023 and ended on June 9, 2023.

This survey work is part of the project’s federal permitting process under the National Historic Preservation Act whereby federal agencies are required to consult with Tribal nations and other consulting parties on the project. The survey work consisted of a small crew digging test pits with shovels measuring approximately 20 by 20 inches square by 20 to 30 inches deep along intervals. Soil was screened through quarter inch mesh screen onto tarps. The test pits were filled in immediately after the excavation is complete; no test pits are ever left open. Crews accessed survey locations via vehicles and on foot.
